Starting the Game

A player takes a player token, cash, and a shopping cart.

Each player has $250 to start.

  • Consisting of 1 $100 bill, 2 $50 bills, 1 $20 bill, 2 $10 bills, and 2 $5 bills.

All 22 item cards (“properties”) are placed near their corresponding board spaces.

All the Chance and Community Chest cards are shuffled and placed facedown in their corresponding card draw decks.

For the Target Circle chips, 4 of them will be placed on the board initially. Each side of the board will start with a Target Circle chip. The color from the board must match with the chip placed. The 6 remaining chips will be placed facedown (the “Target” name is shown) on or near the board.

According to the official game guide for this edition, the last player to go on a Target run will go first. (In other words, the person who shopped in a Target store most recently will go first.)

  • Alternatively, like in regular Monopoly, all players roll the dice to determine who goes first. The highest roller will go first.

Gameplay

When it is your turn, roll the dice. Move your token by the number on the dice. Follow the instructions on a board space that you have landed.

  • NOTE: When you reach GO or Free Parking, you have an option to check out. If you decide to check out, do not move your token anymore after checking out in your turn.

After you complete your turn, pass the dice to a player on your left. However, if you roll doubles, take another turn.

  • If you roll doubles three times in a row, you must go to Jail. Do not complete your 3rd straight turn. Do not collect money for passing GO.

Rolling a 1 for the RedCard

If you roll a 1 on any one die, take the RedCard from a player (or the Bank if this is the first time). Keep this RedCard until another player rolls a 1 (that player then takes this RedCard from you).

NOTE: Even though you use the RedCard when checking out, you still get to keep this RedCard. The only way to lose this RedCard is by a dice roll from another player.

Board Spaces

Items (“Properties”)

If there is an Item card on this Item’s board space, simply take that card. Put it in your shopping basket (NOT outside the basket).

  • If there is a Target Circle chip also on an Item’s board space, take that chip as well. Put it in your shopping basket (NOT outside the basket).

Chance and Community Chest

Take a card from the top of a corresponding card deck. Read on what it says on that card. After using it, put it on the bottom of the same card deck.

Some cards say “This card may be kept until needed.”. Keep such card to yourself (preferably facedown) until you are ready to use it. After using it, put it on the bottom of a corresponding card deck.

Target Circle (board space)

When you land on this red board space, randomly take 1 of the Target Circle chips from their pile. Place that chip on any matching color Item board space.

  • NOTE: Landing on this board space will get the game one step closer to being ended.
  • If there are no Target Circle chips left in their pile, do nothing.
    • That means that it's closing time already.

Deal Dash

When you land on this gray board space, move farther forward to the nearest Item board space with a Target Circle token (regardless of whether an Item card is there or not).

  • If you pass GO, collect $50 (but you CANNOT check out).

If there are no Target Circle chips placed on the board (regardless of the remaining chips on their pile), do nothing and do not go farther.

Just Visiting / In Jail

When you land on this corner space from the first side of the board, place your token in the “Just Visiting” section.

Free Parking

When you reach this corner space, you have an option to check out.

  • If you decide to check out your items, stay in Free Parking after checking out at the end of your turn.
    • Do not move any farther, even though you have a remaining number on your dice roll.
    • NOTE: If you roll doubles (1st or 2nd) after checking out, roll again for your next move.
  • If you decide not to check out, continue moving your token according to a remaining number on your dice roll.

Go to Jail

When you land on this corner space, immediately place your token into the “In Jail” orange section on the opposite corner space. Your turn ends. Do not collect $50 for passing GO. Do not check out.

  • Even though you roll doubles but you go to Jail, you CANNOT take another turn.

GO

When you reach this corner space, you have the options to check out or to collect $50 instead.

  • If you decide to check out your items, stay in the GO corner space after checking out at the end of your turn. DO NOT collect $50 until your next turn.
    • Do not move any farther, even though you have a remaining number on your dice roll.
    • NOTE: If you roll doubles (1st or 2nd) after checking out, roll again for your next move. You will collect $50 after departing from the GO corner space on your next move.
  • If you decide not to check out, collect $50 and continue moving your token according to a remaining number on your dice roll.

Shopping for Items

Players go around the board (Target store) shopping for items. There are 22 different items to shop in the game. Each item will put up on sale at a quantity of only 1 at a time.

Monopoly Target - item card

Item card ("Title Deed")

Item card

An item is available if there is its card on its board space.

The Item card has just a few details.

  • Name of an item
  • Picture of an item
  • Price of an item to pay in order to get the Savings at checkout
  • Savings when the price of an item is paid at checkout
  • Color Set (a merchandise department) of an item

Item is Available for Sale

When you land on an item board space and there is an item, simply take that item (but DO NOT pay for it yet) and place it in your shopping basket.

  • If there is also a Target Circle chip on that item board space, take that as well and put it in your shopping basket.

Item is Unavailable

When you land on an item board space but there is no item, you can ask a player that has that item. If you seriously want that item, pay that player $25 so that they will give you that item.

  • If there is a Target Circle chip on that item board space, take that and put it in your shopping basket.

Color Set

If you have 2 items that are in a same color set (same department), you’ll earn double the Savings for each of them. At checkout, you have to pay those 2 items in order for the double Savings on those items to take effect.

  • NOTE: If you check out with 3 items of a same color set, you CANNOT get double (or triple) Savings on that 3rd item.

Item is Restocked

After an item goes through a checkout, its Item card will be placed back on its board space.

  • Even though a player does pay for an item, its Item card will be placed back on its board space after completing a checkout. Therefore, a player CANNOT own an Item card. Instead, a player pays to earn the Savings.

Target Circle

Target Circle is an incentive that will boost Savings.

There are 10 Target Circle chips for this game. There are 8 chips that will double (x2) the Savings of an item applied. There are 2 chips that will triple (x3) the Savings of an item applied.

At the start of the game, 4 Target Circle chips will be placed on the board. Place 1 Target Circle chip faceup on an Item board space on each side of the board. It does not matter if a chip is “x2” or “x3”, but a chip’s color has to match with a color set. The other 6 Target Circle chips will be on their pile, turning facedown.

When a player lands on an Item board space with a Target Circle chip on it, they must take that chip and put it into their shopping basket.

At checkout, when a player pays for an item, they can (but not required) to use a Target Circle chip from their shopping basket to that item to boost more Savings. After that, that used Target Circle chip will be discarded for the rest of the game.

When any player lands on a red Target Circle board space, they will pick up 1 Target Circle chip from a pile of other Target Circle chips and they will place that chip onto an Item board space matching that chip’s color. Be aware that if there are no more Target Circle chips in their pile, the game will soon be over.

Jail

A player will go to Jail if any of these events happen:

  • (a) A player lands on the “Go to Jail” corner space.
  • (b) A player picks up a card that says to “Go Directly to Jail”.
  • (c) A player rolls three doubles in a row.

While you are In Jail, you CANNOT check out. However, you can make deals & trades for items and money (and “Get Out of Jail Free” cards).

To get out of Jail, you can do any of these things:

  • (a) Simply pay $25 and get out of Jail. Then, roll and move as normal.
    • If you roll doubles after using this option, you can have another turn.
  • (b) Use a “Get Out of Jail Free” card. You can also buy one from another player in a deal and use it. Then, roll and move as normal.
    • If you roll doubles after using this option, you can have another turn.
  • (c) Roll doubles. If you do, you get out of Jail for free. Use the successful roll to move your token (DO NOT re-roll the dice). Follow the actions of a board space that you have landed. After that, that’s the end of your turn.
    • You CANNOT have another turn only if you get out of Jail for free by a dice roll.
    • You have 3 attempts to roll doubles. If you fail to roll doubles by your 3rd attempt, pay $25 and then re-roll the dice and move.
      • If you roll doubles after failing to roll doubles for the 3rd time and paying $25, you can have another turn.
