Monopoly Secret Vault is a Monopoly edition that allows players to guess the codes to open the vault. If a player correctly guesses the codes, they will get a big bonus inside of the vault. After the vault opens, it will be refilled with another bonus and it will be recoded. The hotels can be obtained only in the vault, so these hotels cannot be bought from the Bank. This game can be played with 2-6 players.

- 2 Dice
- One die is regular while another has a vault icon.
In this Monopoly edition, there are no railroads, no utilities, no houses, and no Community Chest cards.
Starting the Game[]
Each player chooses a token to play. These tokens will start at the GO space.
Each player has $3,000 to start with.
- It consists of 5 $10s, 5 $20s, 3 $50s, 7 $100s, 2 $500, and 1 $1000 bill.
Put all 12 Chance cards facedown on its card draw deck.
Place the vault in the center of the gameboard. Make sure it’s closed.
- Put 1 key, 1 hotel, and 4 $100 bills ($400 total) into the slot in the vault.
All players roll the dice to determine who goes first and the turn order. The highest roller will go first. Play passes to the left.
Gameplay[]
When it is your turn, roll both dice. Move your token clockwise around the board in the number of spaces according to these dice. Follow the instructions on a board space that you have landed.
After you complete your turn, pass the dice to another player on your left.
If you roll doubles, you get another turn and roll again.
- If you roll doubles three times in a row, you MUST go to Jail and DO NOT complete your 3rd turn.
Special Die[]
On one of the dice, there is an icon that resembles a vault wheel.
If you roll a vault wheel, follow these steps:
- Pick a number for a code to open the vault.
- After attempting to open the vault (pass or fail), move your token according to the other die.
- Follow the instructions on a board space that you have landed.
- After completing your turn, pass the dice to a player on your left.
- Since a vault icon on a special die does not have a number, you do not roll doubles and you do not get another turn.

Title Deed card of St. James Place. You can get this card only by unlocking St. James Place with a key.
Properties[]
There are 22 properties in this game. All of them are streets.
- The number of streets is the same as in regular Monopoly.
- There are no railroads and no utilities for this edition.
Not all of the properties are purchasable. Only 4 are locked and only obtainable through a key.
Unowned (but Not Locked)[]
When you land on a property that has a price tag and nobody owns it yet, you must either buy it or auction it. You CANNOT decline both options.
Buy[]
Simply pay according to the price tag, and that property is yours.
Auction[]
If you do not want a property or you don’t have enough money, that property must be put up for auction.
All players, including you, can bid. Bidding starts at $10. It can be increased by as little as $10 and in increments of $10. Bidding continues as one player places a higher bid. If nobody wants to bid further, an auction will come to an end. The highest bidder will pay the final bid and take that property.
If all players do not want to bid at all and an auction comes to an end, that property remains unowned in the Bank.
Unowned and Locked[]
There are 4 properties (streets) that have a “steel wall” with a keyhole. These 4 properties are:
- Vermont Avenue
- St. James Place
- Ventnor Avenue
- Boardwalk
These properties can only be obtained through a key. They cannot be bought or auctioned with money.
When you land on a locked property that is currently unowned but you don’t have a key, there’s nothing you can do. It’s a rest space.
Key[]
You can get a key only by the vault. If you successfully open the vault and there is a key in it, you will get this key. Once you get a key, you can immediately get 1 locked property and it’s yours immediately (for free).
- You do not have to land on a locked property board space in order to unlock it.
Once unlocked, place a used key onto a property’s keyhole on its board space. It indicates that it has been unlocked and somebody (who has unlocked it) owns that property.
Owned[]
By Someone Else[]
When you land on a property that is owned by somebody else, you may have to pay the rent to that owner.
If the owner actually asks you to pay, then you must pay the rent to them.
If the owner does not ask and the dice are rolled already, then you do not have to pay.
By You[]
If you own a property, you can collect rent.
Also, you can mortgage your property to raise money of your own. When your property is mortgaged, you CANNOT collect rent on that property. You can unmortgage that property by paying the unmortgage cost (always higher than the mortgage sale) so that you can collect rent.
Color Set[]
You complete a color group if you have all the properties for one color. When this happens, you are allowed to place a hotel in any of the properties within a complete color set.
In this edition, you are allowed to place up to 2 hotels on one property.
Board Spaces[]
Pay to Guess![]
When you land on this space, you have an option to pay $100 to guess. This payment is only for one guess to open the vault. Pick a number as your guess.
If you do not want to pay (or you do not have enough money), this space is your rest space and you do not do anything.
There are 2 board spaces that you pay to guess.
- These board spaces are in the same spots as the Utilities in regular Monopoly.
Guess for Free![]
When you land on this space, you can guess for free to open the vault. Pick a number as your guess.
There are 4 board spaces that you guess for free.
- These board spaces are in the same spots as the Railroads in regular Monopoly.
Chance[]
Pick up 1 card from the draw deck.
There are only 12 Chance cards in this game.
- As opposed to 16 in regular Monopoly.
After using a card, put it back facedown on the bottom of the draw deck.
Some cards say “Keep this card until you’re ready to use it.” In italics. If you pick up one, you can use it when there’s an opportune time. After your usage, put it facedown on the bottom of the draw deck.
There are no Community Chest cards in this game.
Income Tax and Luxury Tax[]
When you land on one of them, you pay $400 to put in the vault.
- These tax spaces are more expensive than in regular Monopoly.
GO[]
Collect $400 as your salary for reaching this corner space.
- It doubles the salary of regular Monopoly (and in many themes of Monopoly).
In addition, take $100 from the Bank and put it in the vault.
- That $100 is not yours, however.
In Jail / Just Visiting[]
When you come from the first side of the gameboard and land on this corner space, place your token in the “Just Visiting” section outside of Jail. It is just a rest space.
- The Jail is the "orange box" of this corner space.
Free Parking[]
When you land here, guess the code for free to open the vault.
- This corner space works exactly like “Guess for Free!” space.
Go to Jail[]
Go immediately to Jail. Place your token in the Jail orange section of the opposite corner space. DO NOT collect $400.
- Even though you roll doubles, you CANNOT take another turn when you land on this corner space.
Hotels[]
In this edition, you can get a hotel only by opening the vault successfully.
- You CANNOT buy or sell a hotel from the Bank in this edition.
Every time the vault is refilled, 1 hotel is placed in there for any player to get if they successfully open the vault the next time.
If you have a complete color set, you can place a hotel in a street on that color set. You can place up to 2 hotels in one street.
Alternatively, you can get a hotel by deals & trades from another player.
Jail[]
A player will go to Jail for any of these 2 reasons:
- They land on the “Go to Jail” corner space.
- They roll doubles three times in a row.
- A vault icon on a die does not have a number, so rolling doubles cannot happen in this case.
There is no “Go to Jail Immediately” Chance card in this game.
Getting Out of Jail[]
There are 3 ways to get out of Jail.
- (a) Pay $100 to the vault (not to the Bank). Then roll as normal.
- If you roll a vault icon, you can guess to open the vault.
- If you roll doubles after paying, you can take another turn.
- (b) Use a “Get Out of Jail Free” Chance card. Then roll as normal.
- If you roll a vault icon, you can guess to open the vault.
- If you roll doubles after using, you can take another turn.
- (c) Attempt to roll doubles to get out for free. You have 3 attempts to roll doubles. If successful, you get out for free; however, you must use your successful roll to move your token. After taking action, your turn will end. If you fail during your 3rd attempt, then you must pay $100 to the vault (not to the Bank). Then use your 3rd attempted roll to move.
- A vault icon has no number, but it will count as an attempt to get out for free.
- If you roll a vault icon during any attempt, you CANNOT guess.
- You can go from (c) to (a) or (b) before making your 2nd or 3rd attempt.
Deals & Trades[]
You can make deals & trades with another player. You can trade properties for other properties, cash, and/or hotels.
- If there is a hotel(s) in a property that you want to get, that hotel(s) has to be removed first and given to a builder (a previous owner). Then that property is dealt. That property’s color set will become incomplete and it cannot be build with hotels.
The Vault[]

The Vault
The vault is the most important piece in this Monopoly edition. Without it, this edition will not be played as intended.
There are riches in the vault. These prizes will be received by whoever successfully opens this vault with a correct code. After the vault is opened, it will be refilled with another round of riches and a new code will be set.
Parts[]
The container is used to store the riches (money, keys, and hotels). The container is closed by the lid.
The lid has a slot to put in assets. It can be open by a successful code.
The wheel has six numbers. To spin the wheel to get the desired number, turn the wheel clockwise (to the right). Align the number near the red button.
The red “M” button is used to open the vault. If not pressed, that means a code (a number) is wrong. If pressed, that means a code is correct and the lid pops off.
The side of the vault has the yellow lock button. After closing the vault (and refilling for another round of riches), press this yellow button 3 times in succession to lock and to set a new code.
Code[]
The code consists of just one number.
You will attempt to open when you:
- Roll a vault icon on a special die.
- Attempt to open the vault first before moving your token.
- NOTE: You CANNOT attempt to open the vault when you are in Jail.
- Land on “Pay to Guess!” and pay $100.
- Land on “Guess for Free!”.
- Land on Free Parking (it’s free to guess).
- Pick up a Chance card that says to open the vault.
Pick a number to open. Turn the vault wheel clockwise. Align the desired number with the red “M” button. Then press the “M” button.
- If the “M” button is pressed successfully, then the code is correct and you take all the prizes in the vault.
- If the “M” button does not work, then the code is wrong and your chance has ended. Better luck next time.
Riches[]
The vault will never be empty, so there are always riches inside. When a player opens the vault successfully, that player will take everything placed in there. After closing the vault, the vault is being refilled with a new round of riches and a new code will be set.
When the game begins, put in these things:
- 1 key
- 1 hotel
- 4 of the $100 bills
After 4 successful openings (when all 4 keys are used up), put in just 1 hotel and 4 of the $100 bills.
After 24 successful openings (when all 24 hotels are given away), put in only the 4 of the $100 bills.
In certain events, the vault will be filled with more riches. Here are these events:
- When a player reaches GO, they collect $400 as salary and transfer $100 from the Bank to the vault.
- Certain Chance cards
- Landing on Income Tax or Luxury Tax; each time, a player pays $400 to the vault.
- A player pays the fine of $100 to the vault to get out of Jail.
Ending the Game[]
The game will end when all 22 properties (streets) are owned by players.
Alternate Ending[]
Alternatively, you can continue the game even though all 22 properties (streets) are owned.
The game can also end when only 1 player goes bankrupt.
Scoring[]
After the game ends (regular or alternate), all players will count their cash and properties they own.
Collect rent for each property you own. A rent is exactly the same in a property’s Title Deed.
- For properties in a complete set you own, collect the increased rent for each property without a hotel in that set.
- For a property with a hotel, collect rent for 1 hotel.
- For a property with 2 hotels, collect rent for 2 hotels.
- DO NOT collect rent for any mortgaged properties. A mortgaged property has $0 rental value.
- DO NOT collect cash for any unused hotels and any unused Chance cards.
You can use cash or a “scoresheet” to tally up the scores.
A player with the highest amount of cash (the highest score) will win.
