Monopoly Scrabble is a boardgame variant from Winning Moves Games that combines the two best tabletop games into one. The game board has the Monopoly board spaces on the edges and sides while the Scrabble tile board is in the center. Instead of using dice (which is not available for this game), players use Scrabble letter tiles on their Scrabble tile racks to get the best word possible in order get a Monopoly space desired and to maximize as much money as possible in one word.

Starting the Game[]
2, 3, or 4 players can play a game.
Each player has a Scrabble tile rack. Each has 7 Scrabble letter tiles to start.
Each player starts with one $500 bill and five $100 bills ($1,000 to start).
Each player chooses a token (one of 9 available) and places it on the GO space.
All 24 Chance and 24 Community Chest cards are shuffled and they are placed near the Bank or board.
The Bank places one $500 bill underneath the “Free Parking” space. Whoever lands on “Free Parking” will get this money. The Bank will replace another $500 bill during a game.
The Bank has its own Scrabble tile rack with 7 letter tiles. These tiles are available for purchase for all players during a game. The rest of the letter tiles are in the Scrabble letter tile storage bag for the start of a game.
To determine who goes first, each player picks one letter tile from a storage bag (letters picked will be placed back in the storage bag). A player who has a letter closest to “A” will go first. Play goes to the left.
Gameplay[]
All players are recommended to know about the gameplays and the rules for both Monopoly and Scrabble.
There is no die (pl. dice) in this game. Instead, players have to come up with a word in order to move their tokens around the board. A number in a Scrabble letter tile is a number of spaces that a token can move. With a valid word, a player moves the total number of spaces with all the letters used for that valid word.
Monopoly Board[]
This Monopoly edition has its Monopoly board on the edges of the combined game board. This Monopoly board is surrounding the Scrabble board. Between these two boards is the red stripe that has the brand logos of both Monopoly and Scrabble.
Like in standard Monopoly and in many other editions, there are 40 board spaces (including the 4 famous corner spaces). However, many of these spaces are different from standard Monopoly to match the rules, gameplay, and fewer number of properties in Monopoly Scrabble.
Scrabble Board[]
The Scrabble board is similar to the regular edition of Scrabble.
The size is 15x15.
There are a few changes from the original Scrabble board: There are fewer multipliers, especially on the diagonals; they are replaced by properties for players to purchase and to own.
Dictionary[]
Players are recommended to use the Official Scrabble Players dictionary to play this game.
- They should use the most updated edition.
- They can use a paper dictionary, a PDF, and/or online.
- Using a Scrabble dictionary online will not bring the list of words, but it will verify on whatever a word spelled is a valid word in the Scrabble dictionary.
- Hasbro Scrabble website: https://shop.hasbro.com/en-us/scrabble
- It has both the dictionary and the word builder.
- Hasbro Scrabble website: https://shop.hasbro.com/en-us/scrabble
Use a dictionary only when another player is challenging on a validity of a word that you spelled.
Invalid Words[]
There are words that are not allowed for Scrabble. Invalid words are the words that do not appear or validated in the official Scrabble dictionary. These invalid words include:
- Proper nouns and names (that is, words that begin with a capital letter)
- Foreign words
- Abbreviations
- Acronyms
- Standalone prefixes and suffixes
- Hyphenated words
- Words that contain apostrophes
- Offensive words (whether demeaning, discriminatory, obscene, or vulgar)
If you think that another player has spelled an invalid word, you can challenge it. A challenge has to occur after a player spells a word.
If a word is NOT in the official Scrabble dictionary, then a player that spelt an invalid word will take back their letter tiles to their rack and their turn ends. No movement on their token, and no points are awarded to them. Basically, they lose their turn.
Property[]
In this Monopoly edition, there are only 10 properties (8 colors, 1 railroad, 1 utility). These properties can be obtained by either:
- Creating a word that covers a property square on the Scrabble board.
- By picking up a Chance or Community Chest card, indicating that you get a property.
In this edition, unclaimed properties cannot be purchased with money at any time. Simply landing on an unclaimed property will not entitle a player to get or purchase that property.
Rent[]
When another player lands on a property that you own, they must pay you the rent mentioned in its board space on the Monopoly board.
If a property is not owned by any player, a player does not have to pay rent.
- However, landing on it will not entitle a player to buy that property.
Go[]
When you reach the GO corner space of the Monopoly board, you get $2,000.
- That’s 10 times greater than in standard Monopoly and in most editions of Monopoly.
Free Parking[]
In this edition, there will be a reward to a player that lands on Free Parking.
At the start of a game, the Bank places $500 into the pot.
Additional money will go into this pot when:
- A player buys a tile from the Bank for $100 each
- A player pays $500 to make a “blank tile” swap; they get a blank tile from the Scrabble board in a swap for a letter tile from their own rack
- A player pays the fine of $100 to get out of Jail
When a player lands on Free Parking, they get all the money from the pot. After this, the Bank puts another $500 into a new pot.
Advance to Free Parking[]
There are 2 other board spaces that will take you to land on Free Parking.
- The 1st one is located where the 1st Chance space is in regular Monopoly.
- The 2nd one is located where Park Place is in regular Monopoly.
If you land on any of these 2 board spaces, move your token to the Free Parking corner space. When landing there, collect all the money in the pot.
- However, you CANNOT pass GO (and you CANNOT get $2000) while doing this; you must directly move your token to Free Parking.
- Especially for the 2nd “Advance to Free Parking” space, where you move your token backwards to Free Parking.
Jail[]
A player goes to Jail when:
- They land on a “Go to Jail” space on the opposite corner of the Monopoly board.
- Landing just outside of the orange Jail space WILL NOT send a player to Jail; a player is “Just Visiting”.
- They pick up a Chance or Community Chest card that says “Go to Jail”.
On their next turn, they must pay $100 as a fine to get out of Jail. They will put their token on the “Just Visiting” area. After that, they take their turn as normal.
The $100 fine goes to the “pot” of Free Parking.
Buying Letter Tiles from the Bank[]
You can buy a letter tile from the Bank’s rack for $100 each.
This option is useful if you cannot make a valid word with your available letters from your own rack.
Like the players, the Bank can have up to 7 letter tiles in its rack. Therefore, you can buy up to 7 letter tiles for the total of $700.
The payment goes to the “pot” in Free Parking (not to the Bank).
You MUST USE the letter tiles you have purchased from the Bank in your turn.
- Therefore, you CANNOT place the purchased tiles into your own rack for your later turns.
You can use more than 7 letters to make a valid word that is more than 7 letters in length.
Before another player’s next turn, the Bank will replenish its own rack to have 7 letter tiles once again.
Using All 7 Tiles ("Bingo")[]
Occasionally, you can make a valid word with all 7 letter tiles in your own rack. You will be greatly rewarded in your turn.
If you spell a valid word using all 7 tiles (and emptying your rack) and it’s a valid word, then you will receive a bonus.
- In standard Scrabble (not this Monopoly edition), you will receive a bonus of 50 points (in addition to the points from tiles and multiplier squares).
In Monopoly Scrabble, you will receive a property that is unowned (not owned by any player). You will get this property for free. If all 10 properties are owned (none are unowned), then you will receive $1000 as an alternate bonus (used only if you CANNOT get a property).
When you get a “bingo”, you will still move your token after receiving a bonus. The number of spaces is only from the numbers of the 7 letter tiles used for “bingo” (do NOT add 50 spaces for a “bingo”).
Bankruptcy[]
When a player must pay rent or pay a penalty, they must do their payment.
However, if they do not have enough money, then they can sell any property (1 or more) to get money. The selling price of a property sold is half the printed value on its Title Deed card.
- Any property sold back for money must be in the Bank.
- DO NOT remove any tile that covers a property square in the Scrabble board.
If a player still has debts even after selling all properties and paying all money remaining, they are bankrupted and they are out of the game.
