Do not confuse this edition with the Astronomy Edition, a USAopoly edition.

Monopoly Space is the Monopoly edition from 2020. In this astro-themed version of Monopoly, players travel around in space to buy planets, mine resources, and build their colony. The resources are used to build the domes that make up the colony. The players have to move quickly before the other players take the glory. The first player to complete their space colony and get back to GO (the Earth) wins. This game can be played with 2-4 players.

  • 70 Resource chips
    • The resources are used to build domes.
  • 2 dice
  • Money (same 7 denominations)

Starting the Game[]

Each player will get $900 (not $1,500). This $900 consists of 1 $500 bill, 2 $100 bills, 2 $50 bills, 2 $20 bills, 4 $10 bills, 3 $5 bills, and 5 $1 bills.

The players have no resources to have at the start.

The Chance and Community Chest cards are placed facedown on their corresponding draw decks.

The 22 property Title Deed cards are placed faceup (with numbers showing) near their corresponding board spaces.

Each player will have 4 small domes and 1 large dome outside of the gameboard. These domes will be used to build a colony.

Each player chooses a token and places it on the GO space. A token has its own quadrant for its own colony to build.

  • The astronaut is at the purple quadrant.
  • The Rover is at the orange quadrant.
  • The shuttle is at the green quadrant.
  • The satellite is at the blue quadrant.

All players will roll the dice to determine who goes first. The highest roller gets the first turn. The play moves to the left in a clockwise direction.

Gameplay[]

Players will move clockwise on the 40-space gameboard. When it is your turn, roll the dice and move your token according to the total number you rolled. Follow the action according to a boardspace that you have landed. After you have completed the action, pass the dice to the player on your left.

  • If you roll a double, you will take another turn and re-roll the dice.
    • If you roll doubles 3 times in a row, DO NOT do anything on your 3rd straight turn but go directly to Jail.

Board spaces[]

Common ones[]

Jail / Just Visiting

When you land here from Connecticut Avenue, you “just visiting” (not in Jail). You do not get anything.

Free Parking

You do not get anything for landing in this space. No money received, no resources received.

Go to Jail

When you land on this board space, you move your token to “Jail”. Place your token in the “Jail” orange area.

  • Even though you roll a double, you DO NOT take another turn.

GO

Simply collect $200 from the Bank for reaching GO.

  • However, you do not receive a resource.

This board space is the “Earth”, where all players have started.

Chance / Community Chest

When you land on a Chance or Community Chest board space, you pick up one card from a corresponding deck. After you use it, place the card at the bottom of the same draw pile.

  • The cards that you can get to keep are: the “Get Out of Jail Free” card (2 of them) and the protection from “Gravity Loss”.

Gravity Loss[]

There are 2 “Gravity Loss” board spaces: one is where the “Income Tax” space is and the other is where the “Water Works” space is.

When you land on this board space, you must drop 1 resource if you have any. If you do not have a resource, you must pay $25 to the Bank to purchase a resource. But you cannot hold this resource; instead, you have to place it on the board space that you are right now. A player who pass, but not land, on a “Gravity Loss” board space with a resource(s) can retrieve all resources in that board space.

  • If a player lands on that board space with a resource, they cannot get the resources. They must lose 1 of theirs, or pay $25 to place the resource in that board space.

There is a Chance card that protects you from gravity loss. When you land on it, the card must be used and your resources are protected. After it is used, put that card on the bottom of the Chance card draw deck.

  • You CANNOT choose to hold that card when you land on a “Gravity Loss” board space.

Wild Times[]

There are 2 “Wild Times” board spaces: one is where the “Electric Company" space is and the other is where the “Luxury Tax” space is.

When you land on this board space, you may steal 1 resource from any player. If none of your opponents has a resource, you may choose 1 player to pay the Bank $25 to purchase a resource but they must give it to you.

Warp Run[]

There are 4 “Warp Run” board spaces; they are replacing the railroads.

When you land on this board space, you have the option of using it to move to another board space. If you want to warp, you must pay $50. You can move to any board space between the “Warp Run” board space that you have landed and the next one. You can move your token to the next “Warp Run” board space. You can stay there to end your turn or you can warp again for another $50. You can go around the gameboard.

  • You can collect $200 if you pass GO while warping.

If you warp to a board space that you want to go, follow the instructions on that board space that you are on.

If you roll a double, you take another turn (even if you warp on your previous turn).

Properties[]

Monopoly Space title deed

Title Deed

There are 22 properties in this game. There are NO railroads or utilities, just so-called "streets". The properties are the celestial bodies in space (stars, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets).

Unowned[]

When you land on a property that is unowned, you can either buy or auction it (you cannot decline both options).

Buy[]

If you want a property, simply pay the purchase price of that property. You get the Title Deed card for that property.

  • The purchase prices on these properties are exactly the same as in most Monopoly editions.

After you buy a property, you have an opportunity to buy a resource for $25.

Auction[]

If you don’t have enough money or you don’t want a property, that property must be put up for auction. If you choose to auction a property, you CANNOT bid in an auction.

If 3 or 4 players are playing[]

If there are 3 or 4 players in a game, there will be regular auctions. A player that put a property up for auction CANNOT bid, so there will be 2 or 3 players bidding.

  • Anybody that is in Jail can bid in an auction.

Here’s an auctioning process:

  1. An auction starts at $10.
  2. Anyone can increase the bid by $10 increments.
  3. If no player is bidding further after a certain amount of time, the auction will end. The highest bidder will pay for the highest bidding amount and takes the Title Deed card for a property auctioned.
    • The highest bidder (and all the other players) WILL NOT have an opportunity to purchase a resource.
If only 2 players are playing[]

If there are only 2 players playing, there’s a special “auction”.

Since a player putting up a property for “auction” CANNOT bid, the only other player can just purchase that property for half the purchase price.

  • That player in an “auction” can decline this option.
  • That player (and the other one) WILL NOT have an opportunity to purchase a resource.
  • Technically, there is no auction when only 1 player is involved.

Owned[]

Property owned by someone else[]

When you land on a property that is owned by somebody else, you have to pay rent. After paying this rent, you can still buy a resource.

  • An owner of that property can also buy a resource after the rent is paid.
Rent[]

The amount of rent will depend on a property, a color set, whether a color set is complete, and whether a player is colonizing.

  • Rent: If you land on somebody else’s property of an incomplete color set, you pay only the basic rent.
  • Color Set: If you land on somebody else’s property and that owner has a complete color set, the rent is doubled. However, that owner does not have a dome in their colony yet (an empty colony).
    • After the rent is paid, you (nonowner) can buy a resource for $50.
      • The opponent’s complete color set is the reason that the basic price ($25) of a resource is doubled.
  • Color Set with Dome(s): If you land on somebody else’s property and that owner has a complete color set while they have colonized already, the rent is 5x the basic rent.
    • Also 2.5x the rent of a color set without colonizing.
    • After the rent is paid, you (nonowner) can buy a resource for $50.
Property owned by you[]

When you land on your property, you actually can do something.

Purchasing Resources[]

You can buy just 1 resource for $25 when you land on your own property that is not part of a complete color set.

Color Set: If you land on your own property and you own a complete color set where that property is in, you can buy a maximum of 2 or 3 resources (at $25 each) depending on a color set.

  • If a color set is brown or dark blue, you can buy up to 2 resources.
  • For a 3-property color set, you can buy up to 3 resources.

Reselling a Property[]

When you think you are low on money, you can sell your property to the Bank for cash.

The sales price of a property is the same as the purchase price.

  • If you get a property through an auction (even at lesser amount), the sales price will still be the same.

This is like a mortgage but with 2 differences.

  • The amount is the whole amount (compared to half).
  • You lose ownership of a property that you have sold (compared to still owning a property being mortgaged).

You also can sell a property to a player in lieu of paying rent. This will wipe out your debt owed to that player, so no money will be exchanged.

  • If you resell a property to a player to pay rent, both you and that player WILL NOT have an opportunity to obtain a resource.

Jail[]

You go to Jail if:

  • You land on a “Go to Jail” board space.
  • A Chance or Community Chest card says “Go Directly to Jail”.
  • You roll doubles 3 times in a row.

While you are in Jail, you can still collect rent, bid in auctions, build your colony, deal, and trade.

To get out of Jail, you have 3 options:

  • a) Pay $50 at the start of your next turn. You get out of Jail, then you roll the dice.
    • You can still take another turn if you roll a double.
  • b) Use the “Get Out of Jail Free” card (or buy one from another player). You get out of Jail, then you roll.
  • c) Roll a double. If successful, you get out of Jail for free. However, use that roll to move your token. After taking an action on a board space, your turn ends.
    • You have 3 attempts to roll a double.
    • If you fail 3 times, you have to pay $50 (or use a card) and must get out of Jail. Use that 3rd roll to move your token.
    • You can change your mind in the 2nd or 3rd attempt.
      • For example, you can go from (c) to (a) on your 2nd turn in Jail.

Deals & Trades[]

You can buy, sell, trade, swap, or deal property with another player(s) at any time. Properties (1 or more) can be traded for other properties (1 or more), cash, “Get Out of Jail Free” card(s), “Gravity Loss” Chance card, and resources.

You CANNOT remove your dome(s) to sell to another player to get cash (or properties).

In Debt & Bankruptcy[]

When you land on somebody else’s property but you don’t have enough cash, you can raise money by selling resources, properties, and/or certain cards. Then, you will pay your debt to a property owner.

  • If you sell a resource to the Bank, you get $25.
  • If you sell your property to the Bank, you get the resell value and the Bank will take ownership.
  • If you sell your property to a player to whom you owe, your debt will be wiped out (no matter the resell value).
    • If you sell your property to a player, neither player can purchase a resource.

Bankruptcy[]

If you still don’t have enough money and you don’t have any assets (not counting your domes because they cannot be sold), then you are bankrupt and you are out of the game.

Resources[]

Monopoly Space resource

Resource

In this game, there are resources to mine and collect from the universe. These resources are used to build domes for your space colony.

Since you cannot use your regular Monopoly money to purchase and build domes, the resources act as another form of “currency”.

There are several ways to mine and acquire the resources, but there are also several ways to lose them.

Additions[]

You can get a resource(s) by doing any of these things:

  • When you buy a property for a purchase price, you can also buy a resource for $25.
    • If you get a property through an auction, you CANNOT buy a resource.
  • When you land on your own property, you can buy a resource for $25.
  • Land on your opponent’s property (the color set is not complete). You must pay the rent first to that owner. After that, you can buy a resource for $25.
  • Somebody else lands on your own property. As the owner of that property, you can buy a resource for $25.
  • Land on your own property that is part of your complete color set. You can buy multiple resources (depending on a color set) for $25 each.
    • For the Brown and Dark Blue color sets, you can buy up to 2 resources.
    • For the other color sets, you can buy up to 3 resources.
  • Land on your opponent’s property that is part of their complete color set. You must pay the rent first to that owner. After that, you can buy a resource for $50 (doubled).
  • Somebody else lands on your property that is part of your complete color set. You can buy only 1 resource for $25.
  • Through a Chance or Community Chest card.
  • Land on a “Wild Times” board space. You can steal 1 resource from any of your opponents.
    • If your opponent does not have a resource, they must buy a resource for $25 but they must give it to you.
  • Pass a “Gravity Loss” board space with a resource(s) “deposited” in that board space. You will get all “deposited” resources from there.
  • Through effective trades & deals.

Subtractions[]

Your resource(s) may be lost or stolen by any of these things:

  • When you land on the “Gravity Loss” board space, you drop 1 resource to that board space.
    • If you do not have any resource, you pay $25 to get a resource but you place it on that board space.
    • If you have a Chance card that protects you from gravity loss, you do not lose your resource (or money). However, you lose that Chance card due to usage against gravity loss.
  • When somebody else lands on a “Wild Times” board space and they choose you, you must give 1 resource to that player.
    • If you do not have any resource, you pay $25 to get a resource but you must give it to that player.
  • Through a Chance or Community Chest card.
    • If you do not have any resource, you lose money instead.
  • Through trades & deals.
    • Especially if you give away resources to get properties in order to complete a color set.
  • When you are in debt and you are raising money, you sell your resource to the Bank for $25.

Using Resources[]

You use your resources to build domes for your colony. The costs of resources to build domes are as follows:

  • Small Dome - 3 Resources
  • Large Dome - 5 Resources

Colony[]

Monopoly Space empty colony

Empty colony. The 4 small circles are used for small domes. The large one is for a large dome.

Colonizing is a main activity to do in order to win in this edition of Monopoly.

Each player has their quadrant corresponding to their token. Their quadrant is where they will build their colony.

A complete colony consists of 4 small domes and 1 large dome.

Monopoly Space - domes

The small dome is the gray one. The large dome is the plastic bluish-green one.

Colonizing[]

Colonizing means that you are building domes to create and establish your colony. You use only your resources to build a dome for your colony.

A small dome requires 3 resources while a large dome requires 5. You must build with small domes first. Once you have 4 small domes in your colony, you can build a large dome.

  • This is like in the regular edition of Monopoly because you have to build 4 houses before you can build a hotel.
    • The exception is that you do not have to remove your small domes in order to place a large dome.

You can colonize at any time in your turn. You can build only 1 time in your single turn.

  • You can build before you roll the dice.
  • Just before you complete your turn, you can build before you pass the dice to another player.

You CANNOT use your regular Monopoly money to directly spend for colonizing. Resources are other forms of “currency”; these can be “spent” for colonizing.

You CANNOT deconstruct domes to sell for money. Once the domes are in place, they are staying there forever.

Completion[]

Your colony is completed when you have 4 small domes and 1 large dome. When your colony is completed, reach GO to win & end the game.

  • If you and another player(s) have completed the respective colonies, you have to race to GO first before another player(s) does to claim victory.

Ending the Game[]

The game will end when a player with their colony completed reaches GO.

  • Warping to GO will count.
  • The GO is the Earth.
    • A player tells the people on Earth that the space colony is completed and ready to inhabit.
